Cakes, Bakes, and Me

Surprise Party Cake

Today, we had the kids Panto Christmas Party. Traditionally we do this after rehearsal on the same Sunday of Greenbrook Methodist Church’s carol service, which we then attend. The adult members provide the food by way of a ‘Jacob’s Join’, and I brought cake! Well no surprise there, you may think? And you’d be right of course. So it had to be a special cake. I’ve had my eye on this design for a while, but was going to do it for the end of show party originally (I’ll have to think of something else for that now 😃) Below are a few pics of the cake in the making. It actually wasn’t that difficult, but very effective I hope you’ll agree.

The cakes were shaped by simply carving out a slight curve on all four sides. After covering, the quilting effect was achieved by simply scoring squares in the fondant, then pushing a star tool into each corner. Little edible silver balls were then dropped into the holes. Sequinned and silver ribbon was attached round the base of each cake to finish. Aladdin’s lamp was made out of fondant mixed with a little CMC powder. The base colour was a mix of mostly yellow with small amounts of red and brown. I used ‘Gold Rush’ powder by Sugarflair mixed with vodka to make a ‘paint’ and covered the whole thing once it had hardened. Once dry, I dry brushed more powder over it. For good measure, I sprayed the whole thing with with Dr Oetker shimmer spray, then added lilac and red edible sparkle dust to the tiers too! Well if you can’t have a bit of sparkle at Christmas, when can you?

Both rehearsal and party went fabulously, Santa came and gave out presents, ably assisted by an elf and a fairy (Our lot do like to dress up! Oh yes they do 😁) The carol service, along with a ‘limerick’ themed nativity definitely put me in a Christmassy mood, and then we entertained the congregation while they were enjoying a post service mince pie by singing a few numbers from the show. All in all, a very enjoyable day.

If you would like to come and see the show in January, please follow the link below to our fb page for details, but be quick as tickets are selling fast
