So today I started on the decoration of yesterday’s cake. Starting with the smaller (shallower) cake, I rolled out two strips of red fondant, and applied to the sides of the cake….
Then rolled out some pink and used the cake pan to cut a heart shape. I then used a stitching tool to create a border and a quilting effect. This went on the top of the cake to create the ‘lid’
On to the base or deeper cake layer. This time the red fondant strip round the edge is wider, so that it protrudes above the top of the cake. It really should have been thicker to support it’s own weight, but my hubby isn’t keen on fondant, so I left it quite thin. Another pink heart was placed on top of the cake, but without the quilting this time, as it will be covered with chocolates ๐ At this point I decided to place a ‘rope’ of fondant round the inside edge to support those sides! I placed a few edible gold balls into the rope, just because it looked pretty ๐
Earlier I made some chocolates using some silicone moulds I had. Basically I melted some chocolate, flavoured it with raspberry (I prefer Lakeland’s natural range, other brands are available ๐) then poured into the moulds. They set pretty quickly, but I should have tapped them a bit harder, as there are still some air bubbles. Also, I assumed because the heart shaped ones were ready, the round ones were too, but I think they could have done with a bit longer as they were a slightly deeper mould. Anyway I want to pretty them up a bit before I put them on the cake, so the final product will have to wait until tomorrow! Stay tuned ๐
Stay safe and healthy
